The National Honor Society was founded with the purpose of recognizing and encouraging academic achievement. The National Honor Society also has as its goal the development of other characteristics essential to citizens in a democracy. These characteristics are service, leadership, and character. The purpose of the organization is to create enthusiasm for scholarship, to stimulate a desire to render service, to promote leadership, and to develop character in individuals.
All current tenth, eleventh and twelfth grade students who have maintained a 4.0 GPA or higher during their high school career are eligible for nomination to our school's Chapter of the National Honor Society. A student must have been in this school at least one semester. National Honor Society membership is not based solely on academic achievement. NHS is an organization that recognizes outstanding individuals who are able to balance academics with other responsibilities and interests. NHS recognizes those well-rounded individuals who serve as positive role models and contributors to school life. Therefore, selection for membership is based upon evidence of the following four qualities: scholarship, service, leadership, and character. (See the Selection Criteria Point System for further information.)
A faculty council comprised of five (5) faculty members appointed by the principal will make the selection. Leadership and service contributions are determined by the student nominee's completion of a Student Activity Information Form (form is available to eligible students at the information meeting in the fall). The student nominee will complete an information form and return it by a deadline. Thoroughness in the completion of the application will be reviewed and scored by members of the faculty council. Discipline referrals and excessive absences will constitute evidence of deficiencies in character and leadership.
Induction is held only once each academic year. This year inductions will be held Monday December 3rd, 2007 at 7pm in the PAC. Any additional information or assistance will be available through the chapter advisors for this school year.
Some of our activities include a campus clean-up, getting donations for Muscular Dystrophy, Forgotten Angel Tree, peer tutoring, and Mobile Loaves and Fishes.
